Even though BC High’s Carl Pierre was only an eighth grader at the time, he remembered.
Nearly four years to day that Braintree upset BC High in the first round of the state tournament, the Eagles were able to attain a little bit of revenge as Pierre scored 25 points and grabbed six rebounds in a 67-54 victory last night at a jam-a packed McNeice Pavilion.
“Everyone always talks about that game from four years ago when (Braintree) came over here and beat us,” said Pierre, who scored his 1,000th point in the second quarter. “I was in eighth grade, and everyone knows about it. So, being able to get my one thousandth point in this game and get big win at the same time it good for me and the school.”
BC High (20-2) lead by as many as 14 points late in the third quarter, but the Wamps (12-8) came storming back. Alex Kennedy cut the Eagles advantage to nine, 47-38, after three with a pair of free throws at the buzzer.
The Wamps momentum carried over into the final frame when after a Myles Owens three pointer put BC High back up 10, Nick Timberlake (24 points) and Anthony Peacock combined to go on a 8-2 run that pulled the Wamps within 55-50.
Travis Evee (19 points), however, connected on a key and-one runner in the paint that gave BC High a 59-51 lead and some breathing room with a little over three minutes to play. Braintree was never able to draw closer as two free throws from Owens and two more from Piere handed BC High a 12 point lead and quelled the Wamps comeback.
BC High coach Bill Loughnane said the key for his team was limiting Braintree’s second chance opportunities.
“We are pretty good rebounding team,” said Loughnane. “Between that and being able to limit their three pointers. The other night we let up just two three pointers against Marshfield and we only let up two more tonight. That helps us prevent them from gong on big runs.”
Early on it was Timberlake who set the tone, picking the pocket of Pierre and throwing it done at the other end plus the foul to put the Wamps up 5-2. BC High, however, closed the first quarter on a 10-2 run capped of by Pierre fall away jumper to take a 12-7 advantage after one.
Timberlake and Pierre continued to exchange baskets into the second stanza with the Wamps’ star senior guard drilling a three pointer from the left wing only for Pierre to come back the other way with a basket of his own. The Eagles were able to extend their lead midway through the second when after Mike Vasil connected on a three pointer, Jordan Minor (16 rebounds) put home an and-one layup. Evee followed by getting in on the offensive attack, splashing two three pointers before Pierre connected one on of his own with the half winding down to put BC High up 37-24 at the break.
“Travis (Evee) and Carl (Pierre), have been there for us all year,” said Loughnane. “We have really asked a lot of them and they have answered every time. When the other guys come to play with them we’re a pretty good team.”
