The third annual Christie Serino Memorial Baseball Tournament will begin with first-round action on Sunday at East Boston Memorial Park featuring a pair of games. East Boston, will take on Amesbury High School at 9:30 a.m., followed by two-time defending champion Saugus and Madison Park at noon. The two winners will play for the championship on Sunday, April 30 at 1 p.m. A consolation game will be played at 10 a.m. that day.
The tournament started in 2015 to honor the memory of the late Christie Serino, a Saugus resident and one of the few coaches nationally to have served as an NCAA Division 1 head coach in two major sports, in baseball at the UNH in the early 1990s and as head hockey coach at Merrimack College later that decade.
After more than 15 years in the college ranks as both a coach and athletic director, Serino served as head hockey coach and athletic director at Malden Catholic from 2006 until his passing in 2012.
"I was blessed to count Coach Serino as a dear friend and mentor and was also fortunate to have been able to coach his two sons, Nick and Anthony, both of whom were outstanding ballplayers," said Steve Freker, who is serving as Serino Tournament co-director along with Anthony Serino. "Coach Serino helped so many players and their families through the years no matter what sport they played or the school they attended. This has been a great way to honor his legacy."
Freker said the Serino family is grateful to East Boston High School headmaster Phil Brangiforte and the East Boston Jets baseball program for their continued support of this tournament is providing the game site.
