St. John Paul has hired Matthew J. Marshall as the school's next football coach, effectively immediately. The announcement was made earlier in the afternoon during a team meeting.

“Coach Marshall brings a great mix of youthful energy and solid football experience at several different levels," athletic director Mark Santos said in a press release. :"The search committee was unanimous and enthusiastic in seeing Marshall as the leader of St. John Paul football for many years to come."

Marshall played football at Marshfield High School and Nichols College, where he also coached. He served in several coaching capacities at Scituate High School, with the South Shore Chiefs semi-pro team, and most recently, at Sacred Heart High School.

“I have been coaching football at many different levels for the past 10 years," Marshalll said. "I am proud to be the next head football coach at St. John Paul. There is no doubt that coaches Muldoon, Delaney, and Harrison formed a great tradition and I am excited to keep this going."

Marshall succeeds co-head coaches Mike Delaney and David Harrison. Last season the Lions were 8-4 and were the Division 6 South sectional finalists. Lions' football was built under the direction of John Muldoon, during whose six-year tenure, the Lions posted a record of 37-18 and qualified for the MIAA Tournament in 2014 and 2015 and earned Central Catholic League Small titles in those two years.

Marshall is the third football coach hired in the last two days, the others beind Ed Mantie (Framingham) and Roy Howard (Cambridge).

In non-football coaching news, Braintree is moving forward in its search for a new girls basketball coach to replace Kristen McDonnell, who stepped down following the season due to some parental issues (namely emails). The school is looking for someone with prior coaching and/or teaching experience and those interested should send cover letter, resume and three letters of reference to:Braintree High School, c/o Michael Denise, Athletic Director, 128 Town Street, Braintree, MA 02184 or mdenise@braintreema.gov

    Application deadline is May 17.
