WESTWOOD — BC High took to the road last night with thoughts of exacting revenge for a 6-4 loss to Xaverian back on April 25.
The Eagles (10-3) quickly changed that narrative, scoring eight unanswered goals in the first quarter, on the way to a 13-5 win over the Hawks.
“We had been waiting to break out like that,” said Eagles head coach Steve Lydon. “I think guys are starting to see what we are capable of as a team. We knew we needed to give our best effort tonight and anything less than that wasn’t going to cut it.”
The Hawks (6-8) entered the game with a perfect 6-0 against Catholic Conference opponents, but BC High was feeling confident, riding a four game win streak into last night’s matchup.
BC High attacker Maverick Woods (three goals, assist) opened the scoring just 1:46 into the game. It would take another 3:10 for Pat Jennings (five goals, assist) to put the Eagles up by a pair.
“Woods has been outstanding for us,” Lydon noted. “He makes a ton of plays every game and since we inserted him into the starting lineup I think our offense has been given a big boost.”
Then, in the final seven minutes of the first, it was a total offensive explosion from BC High, including two more goals apiece for Jennings and Woods, and two for Patrick Bulger.
“We were playing unselfishly,” Lydon said. “That’s the kind of team we need to be, all six guys need to be engaged.”
Jennings and Bulger (five goals, two assists) would each add a goal in the second frame, making it 10-0 at halftime.
“Those are big time guys,” said Lydon. “They’re seniors and they’re leaders on that side of the ball, the first time out against [Xaverian] they were a little snake-bitten, so I think they wanted to come out hungry tonight.”
The Eagles outshot the Hawks 14-3 in the first half, and 22-11 by the final buzzer.
Xaverian would outscore BC High 5-3 in the second half, including three goals from Trevor Carroll, but the surge proved to be too little, too late.
