Dennis Golden loved everything about Catholic Memorial except for the daily 90-minute commute.
When the athletic director and football coaching position at Bishop Stang a mere minutes from his home opened up, the opportunity was simply too good to pass up. Golden announced his resignation from CM yesterday to accept the dual positions at Stang, though the decision came with a heavy heart.
“Catholic Memorial has been fantastic to me, I owe CM a lot,” Golden said. “They've been magnificent to me. The administration, the faculty, the families – I could not have asked for a better situation.
“But the commute was starting to wear on me, 90 minutes back and forth was getting tougher. Bishop Stang is close to my home, my wife works there and I have three children currently attending school there. Getting the opportunity to share the high school experience with my children was very important to me.”
Golden served two tours of duty as head football coach at Catholic Memorial. He coached at CM from 2000-03, posting a 21-19 record. He left the school and spent the next 10 years, teaching and coaching at New Bedford, where his team recorded an overall mark of 43-59-1.
Golden returned to Catholic Memorial in 2014 where he coached the freshman team, before accepting the head coaching job once again in 2015. He was 11-11 in that time, the highlight coming in the final game of his tenure where the Knights snapped an 11-game losing streak to BC High on Thanksgiving, 41-27.
“We were certainly surprised and disappointed to lose coach Golden,” athletic director Craig Najarian said in a statement issued by the school. “We will now turn our attention toward finding the next leader for our football program. This is an outstanding job in a tremendous conference and we will work aggressively to find the right fit.”
