BROCKTON — Freshman Myles McDermott was solid through 5-2/3 innings and fourth-seeded Archbishop Williams supported that with timely hitting to beat Upper Cape, 7-3, and win the Division 4 South title at Campanelli Stadium.
McDermott struck out five of the first six batters he faced and Sam Hamer and James Dolan provided big hits for Archbishop Williams’ first sectional title in 22 years.
“This feels like a dream,” said Archbishop Williams coach Jim Dolan. “This is unbelievable. Our kids are so close and they deserve everything they get.”
Archbishop Williams will face Lowell Catholic in the state semifinals on Tuesday.
The Bishops put up six runs over the span of the second and third innings to give McDermott plenty of cushion. In the second, Hamer laced a two-run triple down the first-base line to make it 2-0. When the next pitch went to the backstop, Hamer scored for a 3-0 lead.
In the third, Dolan (3-3, RBI, 2 runs) hammered a pitch down the third-base line for an RBI double to make it 4-0. Jack Rega followed with a single up the middle for a 5-0 lead. After a single by Ryan Bellew put runners on the corner, Rega scored when Bellew broke for second and it was 6-0 after three.
“When other guys might not be working as hard, we are in the cages just trying to get better,” Bishops coach Jim Dolan said. “If there are two outs, then we still have a chance.”
The Bishops added a run in the fourth on a Casey Earle RBI double before Upper Cape (17-7) scored three in the sixth on RBI hits from Nick Gagner, Riley Thornell and Hunter Mahoney.
