PLYMOUTH – It started out as a pitching duel between Anthony Videtto and Joe Walsh.
But it ended with Cam Drew stealing the show.
Trailing by a run, the Plymouth North High baseball team rallied in the bottom of the seventh against Silver Lake on Tuesday and Drew delivered the game-winning hit to lift the Blue Eagles to a 2-1 walkoff win in the opening round of the Brad Martin Tournament.
“It was just a grind all the way through,” Drew said. “Videtto’s a great pitcher, so it was really tough all game. We just battled. That’s what Plymouth North is all about. Battle to that last inning, last out.”
Plymouth North (4-1) struggled to get its offense going against Silver Lake’s star in Videtto (complete-game, seven hits, seven strikeouts) until the seventh.
Brett Cabral began the stanza with a single and Ryan McCloud pinch ran for him, promptly stealing second base.
Brendan Farrell followed with a single before Videtto struck out a batter and walked another to load the bases with one out.
Nick Lloyd (2-for-3) then plated McCloud to level the score with a single to center field that Aidan O’Neill almost made a diving catch on.
It set the stage for Drew, who hit a two-strike curveball between third and shortstop to win the game.
“(Drew) just battled,” said Plymouth North head coach Dwayne Follette. “He got a curveball. Stayed through the base with the infield in and that was it.”
Matching Videtto’s performance was senior left-hander Joe Walsh, who pitched a complete-game two-hitter, while walking two and striking out five. Silver Lake’s only run off Walsh came in the fourth when an errant pickoff attempt allowed a runner to score from second.
“Two of the best pitchers around,” Follette said. “Walsh was awesome.”
Plymouth North now faces Bridgewater-Raynham, who defeated New Bedford, 5-2, in the other matchup, for the tournament championship on Thursday at 2 p.m
