WESTWOOD — Medfield saw three players score hat tricks, and scored eight unanswered goals down the stretch, earning their seventh straight victory to open up the season, 16-7, over Xaverian.
After falling behind 2-0 early, Medfield (7-0) roared back with three unanswered goals from Jack Cahill (two goals), Kevin McCordic (three goals) and Connor Corrodi (goal) to finish the quarter.
“Our offense is predicated on six guys being able to do damage and sharing the ball,” said Medfield head coach John Isaf. “It could be anyone scoring game to game because we have so many weapons out there.”
The Warriors would keep Xaverian (4-2) at arms length for the rest of the night, never relinquishing their first quarter lead.
Medfield did a masterful job in the second half, taking a 9-6 lead into the fourth quarter. The Warriors only pressed harder on the gas pedal in the fourth, outscoring the Hawks 7-1, including three goals from John MacLean (four overall), to squander any hopes of a comeback by Xaverian.
“That’s how we practice,” Isaf said. “You have to keep pressing and it doesn’t matter what the score is. We just get stronger as the game goes on.”
Matthew Treiber (four goals, five assists) bookended the Warriors eight goal run with his second and third goals of the night, both coming on great individual efforts in close on Hawks goalie Michael Toomey (13 saves).
“I think we’re deep, we know we are a good second half team,” said Isaf. “We continued to share the ball well, took lots of shots - and the ball is bound to go in if you keep up the intensity and keep pressuring the opponent.”
Xaverian would tack on a late goal to end the run, but it came far too late to salvage any type of comeback.
Drew Lee opened the scoring for Xaverian with 5:39 to go in the first quarter, and just one minute later, Sean Sperzel extended the Hawks’ lead to 2-0, before falling behind the Warriors for good. The duo led the way for Xaverian with a pair of goals.
