Christos Argyropoulos ran for 198 yards and four touchdowns as Stoneham (10-0) successfully defended its Division 6 North title with a 49-18 win over Hamilton-Wenham last night in Stoneham. Seth Russell added 115 yards and a score for the Spartans, who will face either Blackstone-Millville or Littleton in a state semifinal next week.
In a matchup of undefeated teams, No. 1 Pope John (9-0) earned a decisive 51-8 win over No. 2 Boston English/New Mission to win the Div. 8 North sectional final at a drenched Everett Memorial Stadium.
The backfield tandem of John Smith Howell (6 carries, 98 yards, 2 touchdowns) and Greg Smith (5 carries 72 yards 3 touchdowns) led the potent Pope John offense, assisted by a Tiger defense that forced five turnovers.
“II couldn’t be prouder of these kids,” said Tigers coach Paul Sobolewski. “It’s surreal. I knew we had a good group of kids. Never in a million years did I think we’d be where we are.”
Howell started the Tigers’ scoring on the game’s opening drive, breaking open a 51-yard run down the sideline on 3rd and 1. After an Eagles’ punt, the Tigers would double their lead thanks to a Roshad Evans 41-yard reception from Anthony Mejia, their second touchdown on five total plays.
From there, the Tigers defense would force three straight fumbles resulting in two more from touchdowns from Smith and Howell to end the first quarter at 28-0.
In the Division 5 South sectional final, junior Will Sheskey ran for 142 yards on 26 carries and combined for two scores as Scituate (9-1) shut out fourth-seeded Canton, 21-0. Senior Aidan Sullivan threw for 220 yards and also had two total TDs for the Sailors.
Jalen Echevarria ran for two scores as St. Mary’s (7-3) won its fourth straight sectional title, defeating Nashoba Tech, 39-14. … Marc Smith, Jan Pena-Ortiz and Daylon Lark all rushed for over 100 yards as Gloucester (9-1) won the Div. 4 North title with a 38-6 win over Wayland.
Christian Keeling had another outstanding performance, rushing for 280 yards and three touchdowns as West Bridgewater (9-1) captured the Div. 8 South title with a 47-28 victory over Coyle-Cassidy. … Chris Carroll ran for two scores as Dighton-Rehoboth (8-2) defeated Milton, 28-25, to win the Div. 4 South crown. … Desmond Dias ran for 115 yards and three scores as Old Rochester (10-0) took home the Div. 6 South crown with a 28-6 win over Ashland.
Harrison Greenslade caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Colten Fahey in the second overtime as Pingree (7-0-1) defeated Dexter Southfield, 13-7. Vito Visconti returned a blocked punt for the other Pingree score.
Ryan Jones ran for 277 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries as Bishop Feehan (5-5) defeated Attleboro, 33-18. … Michael Gagliardi found paydirt twice for Somerset Berkley (4-5) in a 17-0 victory over Middleboro.
Anthony Francis did it all for O’Bryant in a 32-2 win over Chelsea. Tyler Dussault scored three touchdowns proved to be the difference for Bedford (3-7) in a 19-18 win over Weston. Mange Camara rushed for over 100 yards with three touchdowns for Watertown (4-6) in a 25-22 win over Newburyport.
Ryan Murray connected with Stephen Williams for a passing touchdown, and each player picked up a rushing score to lead Medfield (3-7) to a 25-16 win over Cardinal Spellman.
BOYS SOCCER
Jonny Paecht scored three times and Patrick Mejia added the other goal as No. 3 Holliston (15-1-3) defeated No. 2 Seekonk, 4-1, in a Div. 3 South semifinal. The Panthers will face Norton in an all-Tri-Valley League sectional final on Sunday in Milford. The Lancers handed Holliston its only loss, 2-1, midway through the regular season.
Matt Dzwil and Davin Ralph scored to give No. 2 Masconomet (18-2-2) defeated third-seeded Concord-Carlisle, 2-1, in a Div. 2 North semifinal.
GIRLS SOCCER
Delaney Markham and Anna Carazza scored as No. 2 Winchester (20-1) advanced to the Div. 2 North final with a 2-0 win over third-seeded Concord-Carlisle. The Sachems will face Danvers in the North final on Monday at Manning Field.
Dasa Hase and Jill Bowen each scored twice, while Maya Baker and Izzy Musco also tallied as No. 4 Manchester-Essex (15-3-2) defeated top-seeded Mystic Valley, 6-1, in a Div. 4 North semifinal. The Hornets will face Cape Ann League rival Amesbury in tomorrow’s final. The teams split their regular season meetings with Amesbury winning the first encounter, 2-0, and Manchester-Essex responding with a 3-0 triumph later in the year.
