MIDDLEBORO – Needing a win to stay in the Super 8 hunt, Jason Johndrow not only took the mound with authority – he helped himself out at the plate as well.
The senior right-hander fanned six in a complete game, four-hit victory as the Lakers (8-1) took down Middleboro, 5-3. But the highlight of the game was when Johndrow delivered a game-winning two-RBI single in the top of the sixth to put Silver Lake up for good.
“Jason is experienced, a four-year varsity starter and that’s what you want,” said Lakers’ head coach. “You want a senior up there, a guy who is not going to be scared. He’s as good as anybody when he is on.”
Middleboro (5-3) scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the 3-2 lead but Silver Lake struck back in the sixth with two of their own runs. Johndrow’s single was on the first pitch of his at bat and the Hartford-bound senior laced it up the middle to score Dan Collins, who was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Johndrow’s hit extended back a one-run lead as Silver Lake inched closer to a Super Eight bid this season after losing the Super Eight nomination for the first time in three years.
“I was happy as we got to (Johndrow) a little bit and his pitch count was elevated but we just couldn’t capitalize even though he was up in the zone,” said Middleboro head coach Bill Lawrence. “We got some runners on but I take my hat off to (Silver Lake) because they are a great team and they deserve the respect they get."
Anthony Videtto was on base all four times he came to the plate for Silver Lake going 3-for-3 with a walk and RBI.
