COHASSET – In the hours leading up to Thursday night's lacrosse battle between Medfield and Cohasset, many were billing the game a David and Goliath match up. Despite a solid record, Cohasset had a big test ahead of them with one of the top teams in Massachusetts coming to town.
However, once the field lights turned on, the hometown Skippers came out attacking, taking a 7-4 lead at halftime before holding on for a stunning 12-10 victory over the Warriors.
“The kids were just excited. The 12 seniors kind of led the way.” Cohasset coach James Beaudoin said after the game.
And lead they did. Senior captain Danny Axelson led the scoring for Cohasset (12-5) with four goals, three of which came in the second half. Sam Arnold also performed well for the Skippers, out-performing Medfield's perennial face-off attacker Jack-Henry Vara in the circle to give his team a big advantage.
“We always have faith,” Axelson said when asked of his team's approach. “If we come out flying, we can play with anyone. And it showed here.”
The Skippers were also led on the offensive end by Noah Froio, who finished with a hat trick. Will Thomas and Kyle Mcfeteridge also finished with two goals a piece for Cohasset.
On the other side, seniors John MacLean, Kevin McCordic and Matt Treiber each finished with hat tricks for the visiting Warriors. For Medfield, it's back to the drawing board.
“Cohasset is a really good team. A really well-coached team,” Medfield coach John Isaf said. “They wanted it.”
The two teams finished even in shots with 17 a piece. Mason Fitzgerald had seven saves in net for Cohasset while Kyle Gately had five for Medfield.
For many Cohasset players, the euphoric feeling of stunning a top-ranked team will take a while to set in.
“It's unbelievable,” Axelson said of the win. “I can't stop smiling. It's fantastic.”
