Quaboag finally gets its revenge on Millis to advance to Div. 4 state final

WORCESTER — Millis’ trapping press had always stymied Quaboag, ending the Cougars' season for three consecutive years in the state semifinals.

But given another try Wednesday to crack the code, Quaboag delivered.

Behind senior Alexia Paquette’s double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds, Quaboag exacted revenge with a 61-36 Division 4 state semifinal victory over the Mohawks at the DCU Center.

“I was really tired of losing to them,” said Quaboag coach Clifford Lanier, as the Cougars advanced to the state final Saturday (3:30 p.m.) at Springfield College. “(Millis coach) Dave (Fallon) does a great job. My kids were sick of losing to them. When you have five seniors, the press isn’t quite as overwhelming. That was the key. We broke the press.”

Millis (16-9) trailed for the majority of play, but cut the deficit to single digits, 34-25, on a basket from Meaghan Hourigan (13 points) entering the fourth quarter.

Quaboag (18-6) wouldn’t be denied this time, pulling away with an 18-3 run to start the final frame. Paquette got the tear going with back-to-back buckets and Kiarra Dorman aided the run with six of her 14 points.

“Certainly not the way we wanted the season to end,” Fallon said. “I’m proud of the way the kids competed. We just didn’t play our best game today and credit to Quaboag, they played a good game.”

HIGH SCHOOL BASEBALL: New rule changes for 2017 season

A couple of tidbits to come out of yesterday's MIAA baseball meeting.
    1) The MIAA passed the acceptance of the MLB's rule for the IBB to go into effect for the 2017 MA season. Coaches simply need to tell the umpire that you are intentionally walking the batter and no longer need to throw four pitches.
    2) The MIAA will follow the new re-entry rule for a pitcher. In summary, it states: "in the event a pitcher is substituted with a pinch runner or hitter, the pitcher may re-enter the game immediately as a pitcher as long as another pitcher does not throw a pitch.
    3) The DH-Re-entry rule: In the event a pitcher is substituted with a pinch runner or hitter, the pitcher may re-enter the game immediately as a pitcher as long as another pitcher does not throw a pitch.
    4) Seeding: In the event of a tie, the only tiebreaker used will be head-to-head or coin flip.

Mykel Derring recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while the quartet of Tyrone Perry, Willie Veal, Johnny Ortiz all tallied nine.
Nashoba (21-4) made things interesting as it went on a 15-0 run to cut the deficit to 64-56. Justin Peirce fueled the surge with nine points, but Brighton (23-5) refused to fold. Perry scored all nine of his points in the final six minutes as the Bengals closed with a strong kick.

DIVISION 3 STATE BOYS BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIP: Hanover 58, Palmer 43: Matt Delahunt scored 14 of his game-high 24 points in the third quarter as the Indians (23-3) pulled away to win their first-ever state basketball title. John Landry stepped up big down the stretch with a pair of treys, while Patrick Flynn was a force off the glass with 14.

BABC Select Tour

The MIAA basketball season may have concluded last night, but there was still top-level talent playing on the hardwood on Sunday afternoon.

At Cathedral High School, Leo Papiles’ AAU program, BABC, participated in the North Select Games with the BABC sophomores taking on the North Sectional MIAA all-star sophomore/junior team and the BABC juniors facing off against the North Sectional MIAA senior all-stars.

In the second half of the doubleheader the BABC juniors recovered from a slow start and behind 39 points from Cole Swider (St. Andrew’s) came away with a 90-63 win over the Senior all-stars.

The first contest required a comeback from the BABC sophomores as they overcame a 34-32 halftime deficit to the Sophomore/Junior all-stars en route to a 75-67 win. Weston High School’s own Kyle Murphy chipped in 14 points for BABC.

The games were part of a BABC Select Tour that saw the AAU powerhouse take on MIAA all-star teams from the West, Central, and South regions of Massachusetts.

While many may tap the two games as simple shoot-around talent shows, there was a clear competitiveness to both matchups, with BABC getting ready to hit the EYBL circuit in May.

Papile made note of the fact that it is a great opportunity for his players to take on some of the local stars.

“This tour is really good because it intersects MIAA basketball with some of our NEPSAC kids,” said Papile. “The idea that our kids get to play against the MIAA kids awesome. This was not some fashion show all-star game, both sides really wanted to win.”

Less than 24 hours after Cambridge and Brighton captured state championships at the Mass Mutual Center, both team’s respective star players were on the floor for the second of the two games. Jakigh Dottin and Dimon Carrigan of Cambridge starred for the BABC juniors with Dottin pouring in 13 points and Carrigan scoring 8 points to go with a block.

On the flip side for the MIAA North All-Stars, Ty Perry (10 points) and Jordan Galloway (9 points) of Brighton both showcased their respective abilities.

“The biggest thing that should be noticed is the two Cambridge kids,” said Papile. “They probably got home last night at midnight, had a warranted celebration, but we texted them this morning and asked them if they remembered the plays and they answered ‘yes we do coach.’  Sure enough they both came out here and played well and they’ll be integral pieces for us.”

In the first contest of the day St. John’s Prep’s own Nate Hobbs (13 points) made his presence felt at both ends of the court. The athletic guard playing for the North sophomore/junior team threw down a pair of ferocious dunks to go along with a pair of reverse layups.

The all-stars, however, had no answer for Proctor Academy’s Darion Jordan-Thomas who was a monster in the paint all game long. Jordan-Thomas cut through the lane twice and received feeds from the block before practically tearing the rim off on two slams.

In all Jordan-Thomas finished with 22 points, with 13 of those coming in the second half.

By far the most impressive performance of the day belonged to Swider. The six-foot eight-inch stretch four displayed the ability to shoot from behind the arc, post up in the paint, and drive to the basket.

Swider finished with a game high 39 points that included four treys.

Papile noted Swider’s growth in the program.

“He has come a long way in the program,” said Papile. “Sky is the limit for his game. Cole came in the ninth grade, borderline Massachusetts kid right along the line in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. He can play the highest level of basketball.”

HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL: End of an era at Braintree as Kristen McDonnell steps down as head coach

Braintree girls basketball coach Kristen McDonnell has stepped down after eight successful seasons at the helm. Under her watch, the Wamps became a bonafide state power, the highlights being a back-to-back state titles and a 63-game winning streak.
In her resignation letter, she went out of way to thank current athletic director Mike Denise, school officials and parents such as the Herlihys, Russells and Nortons.
While the news comes as a surprise to many, there had been whispers that all was not rosy in Wamp Country. Even while a youthful Braintree team remained competitive this season, rumors were out there that a select few wannabee coaches in the stands weren't totally happy with the distribution of playing time.
The sad part is that McDonnell might have done her best coaching job this year. The Wamps peaked at the right time and knocked off four straight top-10 teams by double digits (including defending state champion Bishop Feehan) in the tournament before running into a red-hot Springfield Central team in the state final.
McDonnell and Denise could not be reached for comment.

Kristen McDonnell's record at Braintree
2009-2010: 10-9 (lost in Division 1 South first round)
2010-2011: 18-3 (lost in Division 1 South semifinals)
2011-2012: 22-3 (lost in Division 1 state semifinals)
2012-2013: 24-3 (lost in Division 1 state semifinals)
2013-2014: 24-1 (Division 1 state champions)
2014-2015: 25-0 (Division 1 state champions)
2015-2016: 22-1 (lost in Division 1 South final)
2016-2017: 21-5 (lost in Division 1 state final)
Totals: 166-25 (.869)
